Dutch students complete Atlantic crossing forced by the global outbreak of Coronavirus COVID-19

(CNN) — As journeys home go, it was a particularly long and unusual one.
The Covid-19 pandemic forced a group of 24 Dutch teenagers to sail the Atlantic to return to the Netherlands, arriving safely in the port of Harlingen on Sunday after more than five weeks at sea.
The students, aged between 14 and 17, were on a sail/study program around the Caribbean on the "Wylde Swan" two-mast topsail schooner. While they were scheduled to fly home from Cuba last month, restrictions due to the global pandemic put their return journey in major doubt.

Told U So, the winner of the World Yacht Trophy for Best Interior Design, is custom made by Molori Private Retreats and created by Benetti Yachts.

This story begins with Kirk Lazarus, South African founder of the Molori brand, which incoincidently means “dreamer” or “to dream” in the South African language of Setswana. He wished to create a ‘chic maritime retreat’; meaning an extravagant super yacht defined by originality, luxury and sophistication. In reality, Told U So, is much more than the imposing and refined design it projects at first glance, surprising its guests with its highly detailed presentation of the Molori lifestyle.

This 43.6 meter vessel can accommodate up ten guests in it in its 5 guest bedrooms fused with luxury, technology and state-of-the-art-design, one them being the Owner’s Suite with a 270 degree view and meticulously decorated in custom designed furnishings and decors, including the tattle-tale Missoni textiles. The Suite also has separate bathrooms for ‘him and her’, a personal study, a screening room and a private sun terrace with a six person Jacuzzi. Nevertheless, the other guests enjoy lavish and individually styled accommodations in the lower deck which include airy and bright en-suite bathrooms; and are visibly adorned following the philosophy of the yacht.

The insistent importance given to space is recognizable once on board: the deck dining/lounging area is commodious, yet refined and intimate. The exacting use of space is surprising, televisions are hidden behind artworks or cupboards, ensuring that no space is compromised senselessly.

Customization is also another prominent element on Told U So. When designing the interiors, Lazarus exceeded any standard of exclusivity in the yachting industry. No two glasses are the same, as every object on the ship, each one has been carefully handpicked from all over the world. Not to mention, the silverware has been specifically created and custom designed by Molori.

The guests senses are relentlessly heightened throughout their stay, whether it’s the simple flow between the interior and the exterior, providing an incomparable onboard experience, whether active or relaxed, or the carefully sourced works of art, design and antiques, reflecting Lazarus’ own travels, fitting for all tastes.

James Roy, Yacht Design Director at BMT Nigel Gee explains: “Visions of the future are often constrained by familiarity with the present or reflection on the past.  Much is made in today’s design community of starting with a blank sheet of paper yet many, if not all yacht concepts revert back to the traditional form – the perception that a yacht should be a form of transport becomes an immediate constraint. 10 Coolest Solar Powered Boats Promising Emission Free Cruises

As the drive for ecofriendly transportation modes is gathering momentum, many new and innovative ideas are surfacing everyday with the promise of a greener future. River or water transportation is one such area where newer ecofriendly ideas are taking shape almost on a daily basis. Old gas guzzling boats are being replaced by newer boats powered by renewable energy sources. Here I am going to tell you about 10 such boats which are powered by solar energy and have the potential of changing the face of water transport in the future.

1. The SunCat23 Catamaran

Developed by a Taiwanese company named Horizon Yachts, the SunCat23 Catamaran uses solar energy to fulfill its energy needs. The solar panels fitted on top of the boat are capable of generating 760 watts of energy which, in turn, powers a 2.8 kW electric motor. This gives the SunCat23 a top speed of 6 knots and the ability to carry 12 passengers onboard.

2. Solar Proa Catamaran

The Solar Proa catamaran uses energy from the ray of sun to power itself. The boat has been designed by a team of designers which includes the likes of Carolin Dissmann, Daniel Boos, Andreas Schwab, and Tibor Bartholoma. Solar PV panels cover the top, front and the rear of the boat. The boat is capable of taking six people for a peaceful ride on the river.

3. ARK Solar Boat

The design of the ARK solar boat has been conceived by Janne Leppanen. The boat has a huge open surface much like a basketball court. The entire surface of the boat has been fitted with multilayered solar panels which drives the electric motor of the boat. The hull of the boat has been made from reinforced plastic fiber that makes the boat light and strong at the same time.

4. Solar Yacht by Novague Studio

 

The Solar powered yacht concept by Novague Studio is unique in the sense that the solar panels fitted on the boat spread out on both sides like the wings of a plane. The panels transform sun’s rays into electricity that powers the electric motor that the boat runs on.

5. Poseidon Solar Yacht

Designed by Demetrius Tanase, the Poseidon solar yacht concept combines comfort and eco-consciousness in the most perfect manner. The Poseidon is a 12 meter long boat that uses solar energy to fulfill its electricity needs. The solar panels that transforms sun’s rays into usable electricity has been fitted on the sails of the boat. The designer of the boat has used extremely thin solar films so that they can be fitted on the sails. The design of the yacht has been done in a manner that would reduce drag and increase energy efficiency.

6. Volitan Solar and wind powered boat

The Volitan boat concept harnesses both solar and wind energy to fulfill its energy needs. That is why, the boat has been fitted with solid sails and double-layered solar panels. The body of the boat has been made from carbon fiber composites and epoxy resin which makes the boat incredibly light and stiff. The solar panels on the Volitan have been fitted on two wings which rise vertically from the top of the boat. Electricity generated by the solar panels is used to drive a pair of 222 HP electric motors.

7. Pedal-powered solar boat

The pedal-powered boat has been conceived by Jonathan Mahieddine. The primary energy that the boat is powered by comes from the people taking a ride in it. It is a pedal boat. But whenever the occupants get tired of peddling, there is a battery pack fitted on the boat which takes over the job of powering it. To provide electricity to the battery, the boat has been equipped with solar panels that are fitted on top of a pole that rises from the middle of the boat.

8. Mercury Marine’s Hybrid Boat

The hybrid boat concept from Mercury Marine uses both solar energy and fossil fuel to meet its energy requirements. Equipped with a pair of QSC 550 HP diesel engine and a lithium-ion battery pack, this ‘green’ boat concept does show some potential as far as the future boat market is concerned. The lithium-ion battery pack gets electricity from the solar panels fitted on top of the boat.

9. Loon solar powered boat

The design team of one of the most successful green cars in the world, the Aptera, has now conceived a boat which uses solar energy to power itself. They call it the Loon. The boat comes fitted with a solar panel that is capable of generating 1000 watts of clean energy from the rays of the sun. That energy is used to power an all electric motor that gives the Loon a top speed of 7 knots and a range of almost 35 miles.

10. The Leviathan

The Leviathan green yacht concept uses both the sun and the wind to give its occupants a green ride. The concept has been created by industrial designer Adam Valmassoi who believes the future of transportation lies in using green energy. The boat runs on a pair of electric jet pump engines which gets its energy from the solar panels and the wind turbines fitted on the boat.

Danish Yachts recently launched its newest model, the 121-foot Shooting Star.  The luxury yacht is the culmination of many Danish suppliers working closely with the specifiers and technicians at the shipyard, to ensure that the systems work seamlessly and that the quality of finish reflects the highest possible standards for which Danish Yachts is renowned worldwide.

With a carbon fiber hull and a pair of powerful 4,750 hp diesel MTU engines, this sporty yacht offers a top speed beyond 45 knots.  Norwegian naval architecture firm Espen Øino International designed her sleek exterior lines and provided an abundance of large windows for ample natural lighting.

The Interior of the Yacht is by Danish design company Art Line Interiors and features luxurious Scandinavian influence, designed to reflect striking and inspirational light in Skagen.  Textures, colors and fabrics bring together a unique feel providing timeless elegance, using the very best classic and contemporary Danish design throughout the vessel.

 

Shooting Star’s sumptuous suites below deck feature amazing attention to detail, rarely seen even in the most exclusive levels of the international superyacht industry.  The owner’s and guest cabins of the M/Y Shooting Star are beautifully appointed, with air conditioning, en suite bathrooms and individual ipod music stations using the very latest technology from Bang & Olufsen.  The systems throughout the interior of the vessel are integrated to work with each other.  The on-board cinema room provides a high degree of comfort, as well as an additional berth if needed.  The crew quarters replicate an equal level of luxury, with a superbly appointed galley and crew mess area, surrounded by individual crew cabins.  Shooting Star accommodates up to 10 guests.

全球最大太陽能動力雙體船"Planet Solar" 靠泊香港

全球最大太陽能船的研發者多姆陽(Raphael Domjan)表示，航運業有極大的潛力可運用替代能源。這艘環球航行的太陽能船已在15日抵達香港。

這艘名為「行星太陽」(Planet Solar)的白色雙體船，船身長31公尺，寬15公尺，上面裝有超過500平方公尺的太陽能板，最高航行速度約15節，相當於時速25公里。

多姆陽說，太陽能船擁有極大潛力，他們握有帶來變革的技術，並持樂觀態度。但多姆陽也承認，貨船和商船只依賴太陽能航行是不大可能的，但可以結合其他乾淨能源，像是風力。

這艘船可搭載多達50名乘客，它去年9月從摩納哥(Monaco)展開環球航行，15日抵港前曾造訪過菲律賓。

這艘懸掛瑞士國旗的船隻於德國建造，花費1,800萬歐元(2,600萬美元)。

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has delivered its first superyacht project, 134m (440ft) Serene — the largest yacht built in Italy and one of the 10 largest yachts in the world.

Designed by Espen Oeino, the seven-deck yacht is fitted with a helicopter hangar, two helicopter pads, a submarine capable of diving to 100m (328ft) and a large seawater swimming pool which can accommodate service vessels.

"We entered with great humility into a sector that was for us completely new and we've demonstrated that we know how to satisfy the desires of the most demanding client, using the most avant-garde solutions the market can call for," says managing director, Fincantieri Giuseppe Bono.

One of the world's largest shipbuilding groups, Fincantieri builds yachts, cruise ships, large ferries and naval vessels including submarines. The company has facilities in Italy and the US, including 10 shipyards.

A gold-plated superyacht built for its Malaysian owner is alleged to be worth £3 billion ($4.5 billion), making it the most expensive in the world.

一艘特別為馬來西亞富商特製的超級鍍金遊艇，據稱其總價值達30億英鎊(45億美元)，可說是當今世界上最昂貴的遊艇。

The British-designed vessel is adorned with 100 tons of gold — covering more than half its surface.

The 100ft craft, which has been billed as the world's most unique yacht, has sleeping quarters covered in platinum and a statue made from the bone of a Tyrannosaurus Rex.

The deck, dining areas, rails and anchor were also made from precious metals including platinum.

The History Supreme — designed by Liverpool jeweller Stuart Hughes — puts even Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich's swanky yacht in the shade.

The billionaire's 533ft Eclipse, which has its own missile defence system and escape submarine, is the world's biggest private yacht — but at £750million it is a snip compared to this creation.

Stuart, 40, who took three years to build the History Supreme for a Malaysian businessman, said: "It was probably the most mammoth task ever."

Stuart — who also made a £5million diamond-wrapped iPhone — added: "I've covered all sorts of things in gold but this has got to be my most ambitious project yet. This will never be topped.

"The businessman just approached us and asked us whether we could do it. He wanted a plane doing as well, but the thing would never take off if we did.

"So he said, 'Can you do the yacht?' and I said, 'We'll give it a crack.' Then it was pretty much a case of can you make this gold, can you make that gold?

"We just did what we were told and are delighted with the result."

The yacht was built in Italy and completed in Malaysia two weeks ago.

Mulder Design was challenged by Vicem to produce a state of the art design that could showcase Vicem’s legendary craftsmanship. The interior design, by Art-Line Studios will bring a new definition to the word luxury. The 46M are built in a state-of-the-art facility in Antalya, Turkey. Composite materials, applied with resin infusion and sandwich techniques, were chosen to achieve the best possible strength-to-weight ratios.

The result: a 200 ton yacht, powered by twin 3650 HP MTU engines, that delivers 25 knots top speed and efficient ocean-crossing range at reduced speed. Her three decks plus Sundeck design provides outstanding elegance for a knowledgeable owner, and five cabins of thrilled guests.

Her signature open Atrium design provides 45 feet of unbroken natural lighting, from the very top of the Sundeck all the way down to the Lower Deck. The main deck’s Master Suite uses every inch of this yachts’ 30 foot beam, and includes a CEO’s office and a private gymnasium. A graceful wraparound entry way leads to an inviting Jacuzzi and an arcing full-width head. Far aft is the galley, a dining area for ten, and a relaxing lounge and a spacious upper lounge area.
